...or make the spare/
Congratulations to Sylvia Berggren who won the Learn to Bowl.com tournament at the Gold Coast on Sunday, Sept. 27th. Thanks to everyone who came and participated. Congratulations to Gregorio Daisley who bowled very well and blew away the field after 5 games of qualifying and was 100 pins ahead of 2nd place. Greg was the #1 seed in the stepladder finals but fell to Sylvia in the title match and had to settle for 2nd place prize money. In the semi-final match, Sylvia was getting 36 more pins of handicap as she took on former LPBT member Linda Espinoza who was the #3 seed after qualifying. Sylvia wasn't about to rely on handicap though as she won the game scratch 158-141. Next in Sylvia's sight was one of Las Vegas' best bowlers, aka the King of Panama. This time Greg was giving away 65 pins of handicap to the spunky Silver Fox Sylvia Berggren. Apparently Sylvia came to the conclusion she don't need no stinkin' handicap, as she went on to bowl a fantastic game of 178 scratch to best Greg's 158. Other finishers were Irene Glazer in 4th place, 5th place was Jake Abstender, and Leah Glazer and Teri Jarley tied for 6th.
It should be noted also that Sylvia had carpal tunnel surgery just a few months ago on her bowling hand and has come back like a lion. Sylvia was also the Learn to Bowl.com Bowler of the Month in July as her bowling has improved by leaps and bounds in recent months. On Sept. 28th, just one day after her tournament win, Sylvia bowled league and rolled a very nice 544 series that included 2-193 games. Sylvia currently averages 145.
Another fact worth mentioning, is that the oil pattern was a "modified house shot" according to Gold Coast employees. There was more oil to the outside part of the lane and less oil in the middle of the lane. This is generally a lower scoring condition than your typical house shot and much less forgiving. For those who didn't win, I hope you had fun and gained more experience which should help you in the future. A special thanks to Teri, Michelle, and Phyllis for bringing food treats for everyone to enjoy, and especially to Teri and Margie for their wonderful help running the tournament. Margie didn't bowl with us because she was set to bowl in the semi-finals of the ABT tournament later on that day where she finished in 3rd place. Nice bowling Marge! Another thanks to Jim and Linda Richardson who came all the way from Phoenix for a week of bowling and lessons and to bowl in our tournament. Our next tournament is tentatively scheduled for Super Bowl Sunday.
