2012 Annual Super Bowl(ing) Tournament
Champion George Nieves
This year the title went to last year's 3rd place finisher Mr. George Nieves. George throws a great ball and is consistently in the "pocket" so it's no surprise that George worked his way to the finals this year also. In 2nd place was the always tough John Jakus who hadn't bowled in about 2 years after serving a 2-yr military tour in Iraq. It was great to see John back, safe and sound and bowling like the trooper that he is. 3rd place went to hard-charging Hao Hang as he fell to George in the semi-final match with an open in the 10th frame that cost him a chance at the title. Hao looked like the guy to beat as he pounded the pocket during the 5-games of qualifying with his great balance and "ball roll". Rounding out the top 4 was the always steady Marlene Cherchar who bowled a great 5th and final game to secure the last cashing spot.
We also had a contest where at the start of the tournament all the bowlers guessed what they predicted their top 3 games would total without going over. Marlene guessed a 3-game total of 735 and bowled a very nice 730 to win another $20. Marlene's name can usually be found near the top of the leaderboard in most any tournament she bowls.
Mr. Jim Jakus (father of John), won the $20 prize for shooting the first 300 game as he bowled the no-tap "perfecto" in game 1.
Thanks to Alex and his mom Lori Reynolds for donating their old (like new) 10-lb bowling balls which went to another youth bowler who's just getting started. Thanks to Jean Parkey for bringing the awesome chocolates and for all the bowlers who volunteered to bring food dishes although we were notified after my email was sent that we can no longer bring food or drink like we have in past years due to Coast Property policies and Clark County food regulations. Thanks also to the Gold Coast for allowing us to have the tournament there and for all they do to promote bowling and our coaching program. Most importantly, thanks to all the bowlers who came and participated and for supporting the tournament and our coaching programs. It's great to see how so many bowlers improve by so much over time all the while developing their own particular style. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas regarding changes in the format or anything else for next year's tournament, please let me know. Many thanks also to Evelyn for her help in running the tournament, preparations before the tournament, taking pictures, and much more.
Congratulations again to George Nieves as he is the 2012 Super Bowl(ing) Champion.
